The Universal Service Fund pays for this and every landline in the US contributes a small amount to pay for it. It is similar to the lifeline service provided by the US government.
If you lose your Safelink phone it is possible to call TracFone, who will issue you with a new one. TracFone are the company who own and run Safelink.
To call TracFone, dial 1-800-867-718 for your TracFone office and report the phone missing. You will more than likely need to also provide details of its loss, when it was last used and some other detailed information.
You will then have to give the representative the activation code you got with the phone, if you do not have this the phone number will suffice, though you may be asked for more information to clarify you are the owner of the phone.
You can decide to keep your old number or get a new one. After this is all done it is best to ask the people at TracFone and ask them to email you a copy of your report.
This will also include a tracking number for you to follow the postage of your new phone which should arrive in three business days. You can keep check on this using the site supplied with the email.
