To add to the previous answer, and to help you better understand, LAN is Local Area Network such as found in homes or offices. The LANs connect into the WANs in each geographical area which interconnect into a world wide network of interconnected WANs.

LAN is local area network while WAN is wide area network. Internet is also a kind of WAN because we can access data from other cities and countries.

LAN and Wan both are kinds of network, following three characteristics differentiate them: Topology, media and protocols. WAN is network which connects computer over large area, and Internet falls in WAN. In a nut shell, Internet is a form of wide area network.

First make yourself more clear, a WAN is a computer network that covers a relatively large geographical area.
As Internet connects world wide computers together so it comes in the category of WAN. Also for your information Internet is the largest Wide Area Network.
