- The origins of using symbols in text messages
Texting different faces and emoticons is a fun and interesting way to send across your feelings. Smiley faces have been used since the invention of text messages to express the message that the sender is happy.
Soon enough, unhappy faces followed, then frowning faces, crying faces, laughing faces and even shocked faces. They were symbolized with a simple colon for the eyes : A dash for the nose - and different letter or comma for the mouth; depending on the kind of emotion that was being sent.
As phones progressed, these simple symbols were soon replaced by cartoon images and it was possible to send hearts, kisses, hugs, thumbs up and thumbs down, glasses of wine, birthday cakes, glasses of beer, party hats, stars, cups of tea, think bubbles, clocks, angry devils and much more.
Many mobiles these days will give you the option to download an app to use cartoon animal faces in your text messages. If you do not have the option to do this there are other ways of inserting an animal face into your messages by using simple symbols.
