In order to stop people being able to see your Friends List on Facebook you first need to enter the ‘privacy settings’ page of your account. Within this page you should see, at the top, the header ‘Connecting on Facebook. The sentence underneath reads ‘Control basic information your friends will use to find you on Facebook. View settings’, click on the ‘View Settings’ hyperlink to take you to the next page. Scroll down until you find ‘See your friends list’. For this setting you can then choose who is able to view your friends list and whether you will appear as a recommended friend to others. If you want to block everyone from seeing this list select ‘Customise’ and then choose ‘Only Me’ from the drop down menu. Within this menu you can select certain other friends who will be able to view your list or choose specific people to block it from. Once everything is how you want it, press ‘Save Settings’ and exit the privacy menu.
It is important to regularly check your privacy settings on Facebook. Often there are updates made to the website that automatically change your settings and make them more public than you might want them. The default settings on Facebook are not necessarily the most private so in order to ensure that only the people you want are viewing the details of your profile, you will need to change these settings yourself. The settings are very specific for each option of the site, e.g. Privacy of your friends list, tagged photos or applications, so there are many options that you can miss without realising. It may be a chore to go through every part of your private settings but to avoid being a victim of spam or hacking, it is essential that you do so.
