In terms of being able to physically connect your iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad to an external webcam, then the answer is that you can't.

That is of course unless you are willing to perform some cable splicing and jail-breaking, and then develop an app to make your device work with iOS.

But, even if you're not prepared to do this, read on -because there is a way to achieve the same thing over the air, using WiFi (or 3G/EDGE if you have an iPhone).

Webcam Video Streaming
The iCam app is available from the App Store for $4.99 and, once installed, will allow you to monitor live streams of video and audio from multiple sources.

The greatest drawback to this is that the webcams you monitor will need to be connected to a computer, thereby increasing the amount of hardware required to make this solution work. That computer will also need to be continuously monitoring the feed, so will need to be switched on too.

But if you wanted to, you could wire up a series of webcams in your home or office, connect them all to a central computer, and then monitor them in real-time from your device. iCam even allows you to set up alerts that notify your monitoring device whenever motion is detected by one of your cameras.

Using the iPod Touch as a Webcam
Don't forget that all portable Apple devices now have built-in cameras, which can also be used as webcams. To use this, you'll need a different app, called iWebCamera, which is also available from the App Store. Watch the video below for more information:
