Now that Pokemon Black and White are out there are 649.
There is 493 pokemon total, but there are various forms that add to that. For example, the pokemon Rotom. If you use a special key item on him or whatever, you can transform him into different forms. That adds 5 to the original 493 pokemon. There are 5 forms PLUS Rotom.

There's 493 on my pokedex , thats the max to get on platinum, you have to beat the champion to obtain them all. Migrate pokemon off the pokemon GBA games (aka game boy advance games) after you beat the champion. -Sasuke56
