Some reqire you to "plant" software on the device itself, and others can just be activated by simply getting the other party to respond to a simple text message (those obtain less information) On the more expensive end, the software installed programs typically have a web site where you can obtain the information remotely on a device in real time, and others (text responders) primarily allow tracking of the location of the device (barring they are in a gps enabled network, with a gps enabled phone. (e911 compliancy-most cell phones are required to have this by law atm.)
