Statistically speaking, there are many more dangerous machines than the computer commonly used in the workplace, and the home. However, computer usage is not without its inherent dangers.

Repetitive Strain Injury
Probably the most common computer-related illness is Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).

RSI is usually caused by small, repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, shoulders or neck, as a direct consequence of using computer input devices such as mice and keyboards.

The pain can be excruciating and can make it impossible to use a computer for a while. In the worst cases, the damage can be permanent, so it is best to take precautions.

If you use computers regularly, you should:

  • Make sure your computer and desk are set up correctly, so that you can work comfortably
  • Adjust your mouse tracking speed to make it easier and more comfortable to use
  • Consider alternative input devices, such as trackpads
  • Learn keyboard shortcuts and gesture-based inputs
  • Take regular breaks away from your screen
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome affects the hands and wrists, and is caused by pressure on the median nerve which runs along the arm down to the hand. This condition can also be caused by performing repetitive actions or by working with bent wrists.

A lack of adequate rest periods is understood to be one of the main reasons why computer users get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, although the condition can also affect manual workers, too.
Tenosynovitis

The tendons that connect the muscles to the bones in your hands are covered with a lubricated sheath. Highly-repetitive keyboard movements can lead to a build up of excess fluid in these sheaths, which can then become swollen and painful.
