Go to the Friends link at the top of the page. Click the upside down triangle and choose "Online Now." Then a page will show all of your friends who have been online in the past 5 minutes. You can then click on the profile and on the left side under their picture, you might see "______ is online."
But it also depends on your friend's privacy settings. They might have set it to so none of their friends can see that they are online.
