- What is The Sims?
The Sims is a computer game that developed by Maxis and first released in 2000. The game is a simulation of 'real life' and the first version of the game was a fairly simplistic neighborhood that had to be developed. Players began by creating a 'family', a set of characters that were to live together in a house. Players could develop their personalities so that when they began playing the game, they had to bear in the mind the personality of each character.
Once the family was created, players had to build a house for them to live in. They could then control the characters as they lived their lives. The aim of the game was to make sure the characters were happy and lived happy, healthy and balanced lifestyles.
To do this, players had to ensure that the characters went to work in order to have money to eat and maintain their lives. The characters have to get enough sleep, eat healthy, socialize and maintain relationships, relax, exercise and have fun.
- How the game has developed
The Sims is more than just a game and follows Maslow's Hierarchy of needs. This was a psychological theory developed in 1943 by Maslow that puts he needs of human beings into a hierarchy. At the bottom of the hierarchy is our basic needs and these are the things we need to survive such as oxygen, food and water.
On the next level we need safety which includes shelter, resources and way of providing for ourselves and maintaining good health. Next we need love, friendship and companionship followed by self-esteem and confidence. At the top of the hierarchy is self-actualization.
Each hierarchy must be met for the characters of the game before players can proceed onto the next level of the hierarchy.
