Windows XP may sometimes be unable to open a file because it does not know what program created the file.  If the program is installed on your computer then Windows should not ask you what program created the file. But if the program is not installed on your computer then Windows will ask you to provide the software to open the file.

For example, if you were to copy a file from school or work onto a portable hard drive such as a Microsoft Word document, however you don't have Microsoft Word on your home computer where you are trying to open the file. You will not be able to open the file until you have downloaded a program such as Microsoft Word or an equivalent program which can open the file.

So if you wish to open a file then right click on it and go to properties. Check its extension which will allow you to know which software you need to open the file. Then simply go online or into a shop and buy or download the program which is needed to open the file.

A computer program is a sequence of instructions written to perform a specified task for a computer. A computer requires programs to function, typically executing the program's instructions in a central processor. The same program in its human-readable source code form, from which executable programs are derived e.g., compiled, enables a programmer to study and develop its algorithms.

Computer source code is often written by computer programmers. Source code is written in a programming language that usually follows one of two main paradigms: Imperative or declarative programming. Source code may be converted into an executable file sometimes called an executable program or a binary by a compiler and later executed by a central processing unit.

Windows want to know what program was used to create the file. If the program is installed on your computer then Windows will not ask you but if not then the Windows will ask you to provide the software to open the file.

For example, your friend sent you a file which is created in Microsoft Word and you don't have Microsoft word on your computer then you can't open it until you install the program. The file extension is 'doc'.

So if you want to open the file then right click on it and go to properties. Check it's extension and you will come to know which software you need to open the file.

What if the file is an audio driver? I just need to open this so my audio can work but all I get on the internet are ads to buy software for "Fix all driver issues. It's free. And the program cures Aids" but they are not free they trick you. I just neeeed to download a regular audio driver. Dell has them on their site but after downloading it it asks for what program created it... I don't know, I don't work for Dell. Why don't they pay me for finding out? Don't they know? It's their program.
