While it is a load of crap, You cannot use MP3's (probably what you are trying) as ringtones. The simplest solution is to play the music clip on your computer, hold the phone to the speaker and record a new sound. Then choose the SOUND which is a QCP file as the ringtone.
Evidently they were afraid of legalities of the MP3 world. So all those songs you have possibly paid for in the past at iTunes, NOW you have to do it this way, or hop onto their ringtone service and pay for them :-(
