RTF=Rich Text Format is used by many word processors regardless of their vendor. It has less features than proprietary formats but can be used on several platforms with several word processors.
DOC is the proprietary document format of Microsoft Word and is - with all capabilities - only implemented in that one product.
So use RTF only if you need to give a word processor file to someone else who may want to edit it and doesn't own MS Word.
