Go to Tools, open Option and in the File Type tick DVD Video (its better to select all files shown there). Of course VLC Player is a good choice, it can play almost all media files. But in order to play all audio and video files, its better to install all codecs. K-Lite Codec Pack is the best one available.

Windows Media Player as default does not come with the codec's required for playing DVD's. There are two options:
1. Purchase some DVD playing software eg. PowerDVD
2. Download free codecs eg. K-Lite Codec Pack

Once either of these are installed you will be able to watch DVD's through Windows Media Player

The problem is not only with the codecs but also with the media player you are using. The best media player for playing DVDs is POWERDVD. Get it and play your DVDs without any problem. You can download the latest version of this software from the following link.
www.9down.comm
Go to this link and type PowerDVD in the search box at the top right corner.

The problem you are facing is because the required codecs that are needed to play dvd files, mostly avi formats, are missing from your player.
To download free codecs please visit the following link.
