The Xbox 360 games console was produced by Microsoft, and is the successor to the original Xbox. It competes with the Nintendo Wii, and Sony's PlayStation 3. Currently there are over 53.6 million Xbox 360 games consoles throughout the world.
The Xbox 360 made its debut appearance on MTV on May 12, 2005 though it had a much detailed and publicised launch later on in the month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Upon release it sold out completely everywhere except for Japan.
Some of the major features of the Xbox 360 are its Windows Media Center, with its multimedia capabilities and its integrated Xbox Live feature that lets players compete online, download game demos, arcade games, trailers, music, and TV shows and movies. It is also able to access third party media streaming services such as Sky Player in the United Kingdom, and Netflix and ESPN in the United States.
On June 14, 2010, Microsoft released a newly designed Xbox 360 that is slimmer than the first version and features a 250 GB hard drive, integrated Wi-Fi, an optical audio output and a special AUX port, amongst other things.
Microsoft has also released special editions of the Xbox 360, often to support the publication of new products on the market. For example, the limited edition Simpson's console, which sported a bright yellow exterior with matching controller and which coincided with the release of The Simpsons Movie, and was given out to winners of a drawing competition. They are an extremely rare version of the Xbox 360; only a mere 100 were produced in total, and so are much prized by their owners.
Microsoft believe that the Xbox 360 is currently only half way through it s life span, so fans can expect upgrades and other exciting features to entertain them until 2015.
