Sending a text message from your computer is really easy. You’ll just need a working computer with an Internet connection and an email address. The first thing you need to do is know how to format the message. In order for you to format a text message properly, you also need to know who the cell phone provider is. If you know which network you are catering to, then there should be no issue sending the message in the way that will be outlined below.

The next step must be followed carefully. Let’s say for instance that you are trying to send a text message to somebody that is on the Verizon network. In order to send this SMS message to your friend, via email, you need to send the message to [email protected]. Simply write the message as you would an email, and then use this address in order for it to be sent to your friend’s mobile device as a text message.

If you’re sending it to an AT&T phone, you should use [email protected]. And finally, if you’re trying to contact a friend that owns a Sprint cell phone, then you need to send the message to [email protected].

You can obtain a list of addresses from the website www.sms411.net, so that you can get in touch with any of your friends via email.

One other popular method of sending text messages through your computer is to use Skype. This software lets you talk to friends over the phone, and even send them text messages, without even using a cell phone. Be prepared to top up some Skype credit when expecting to use these services.

One of the most specific way to send an sms or text message from a computer to a cell phone is to contact the cell phone provider of the person you want to contact and ask them for there directions.  In Canada two of our major providers, Bell and Rogers, both support this function.  With Bell you use the 10 digit number [email protected] or Rogers would be [email protected]  and I believe they all similar ways.

TextPort.com  - www.textport.com works great. It's a reliable online texting site. You can send and receive texts to any mobile device in the U.S. For free. The delivery time is very fast (about 5 seconds) and they don't append ads to the end of your message like other sites do. Registration is optional, but worthwhile because you'll be able to set up contacts and access an online inbox, message history and other features. TextPort.com also offer picture (MMS) messaging for files up to 3MB. You can also send and receive international texts. Outgoing messages cost about 2 cents, but they give you 10 free credits (good for 10 messages) when you register, so you can try it first for free. Incoming international texts are free. Ultra cheap compared to a $0.45 round-trip text message sent from an AT&T or Verizon account.
