Setting up a laptop webcam may vary depending on the type of computer and the type of webcam that you have. Most webcams will come with software and simple guidelines of how to install it. This might be in the format of a CD or through logging onto a website.
There are a number of websites you can use to make free video calls with webcams including Skype and AOL. The most common is Windows Live Messenger, and to set up your webcam for this, follow the following instructions:
1 Run the set-up CD to install the software and drivers for your webcam.
2 Then connect your webcam to the computer using the USB port. Some webcams may be connected in another way but your set up CD should explain this, if that is the case. It should automatically be recognised by Windows.
3 Google Windows Live Messenger and download it for free and follow the steps and prompts. Then you need to set up an account or ID, choosing a username and password.
4 Check your speakers and webcam microphone and working then set up your webcam by clicking on "tools” and "audio and video setup” and follow the instructions. At the end of this process your webcam will be fully installed and you should see yourself on the laptop.
5 Search for your friends using their email addresses or get them to sign up to the service so that you can begin the free video chats.
