I have the same issue. I made another account with a different email address and I've confirmed the new one. On my old account I can edit my display name, but on the new one, it's grey.

Click on your name in messenger at the top
then a window-type will be displayed and choose options
now on personal tab you can change your name or check the other options (I'm not sure)

Go to your profile then click details then it says your name ... ...
Then next 2 it it says edit click that and enter your name peace of cake ( yummy!! )

If it is greyed out: Make sure you have verified the email you are using for the account. Do this by checking your email and following the instructions for verification. Once verified, log out and log back in to msn.

Your computer is probably logged on with a different live user (not on messenger) ..
Go to hotmail.com and try to change it from there...

To change your display name on MSN Messenger, all you need to do is click on the box where your current name is displayed. This is the box where your status is displayed (your status is where it says whether or not you are online, busy, away etc).
You can also change your display name by clicking on the arrow next to your display name and scrolling down and clicking on 'Personal Settings'. A window should appear with your current name and all you need to do is delete it an enter the name you want to be displayed to all your contacts. When you have changed it click on 'OK'.

Goto top right hand side of messanger, click show menu - tools-options.
Then change your displayed name and click apply

Loookk!!!! It just not working I think messenger is gettin a little confusing and they all said it its still ggggggrrrrreeeeeyyyyyy!
Here's how I fixed it the exact same issue:
1. Go to account.live.com
2. After you log in, click on "Messenger" at the top of the page and select "Profile" from the drop down menu.
3. Click on "Edit Details" to the right of your Avatar
4. Click on the "Edit" link next to your name
5. Then just edit the name how you'd like it to be and click on "Save".
6. Log out of the site
***Mine updated on the actual messenger right away, but if the issue persists, you may want to try logging out of the site and the messenger and then just log back into the messeger***

Very simple, once you are signed in and can see the main window in front of you, press Alt and while keeping Alt pressed, press T (Alt + T), a menu will appear, click on the word "options" there you will see your current display name, you can change it to whatever you like and press okay on the bottom of the menu and your new screen name will appear momentarily.
