It’s a real pity that there aren’t more virtual worlds underwater. Second Life, Champions Online and World of Warcraft have all included areas under the sea to the main game. But as they require downloads, I know it’s not what you’re looking for.
Divein is still up and running, but it does need you to have Adobe Shockwave to be able to access the game and immerse yourself. You can find it online at divein.bbgames.com/ There is also a new game I’ve heard about but haven’t played, called Virtual Family Kingdom (VFK), which advertises a 7 day long quest to earn mermaid magic called Merfolk quest. They added areas for mermaids in 2008 and as far as I know, VFK does not need to be downloaded. You will need to register for membership and go through a character name review and approval process. The page to do so is here: www.virtualfamilykingdom.com/classes/access/register.php As always, remember to be careful with your account details and password and never reveal either, to anyone in the game, even in exchange for gifts or points.
There is also a browser-based version of Second Life (interest.secondlife.com/beta) that might give you access to the underwater areas, but there are a ton of caveats that come with the no download version. It is a promotional exercise and therefore only gives you one-hour access to the world (including the 45 sec ad vid in the beginning). It requires a tremendous amount of space (an estimated 1080 MB of bandwidth) and logs you in for one hour by IP. I’m always on the lookout for more mermaid avatars and underwater world and hope that a really good one exploring sealife is developed soon.
