You can program up to 6000 channels and thus as many local police frequencies as you can with the scanner. This model introduces the first-ever GPS-enabled scanner, allowing automatic selection of nearby radio systems for scanning, and also offers APCO 25 digital capability allowing consumers to monitor the activities and signals of city and government service departments. It uses Uniden's Dynamic Memory Architecture, allowing you to program as many channels, systems and groups as you can until the memory runs out instead of locking you into a fixed amount of banks and channels. In addition, Close Call RF Capture Technology lets you instantly tune signals from nearby transmitters. A representative set of systems are pre-programmed into the scanner, which you can use, edit them or just delete either with the computer program or on the system. To program a new system from scratch, press the Menu button on the left side of the radio and select 'Program System'. Following this, select 'New System' then 'System Type' (either conventional or one of the trunking flavours). If you select P25 you will be asked if you want a Standard or One Freq type; if you select EDACS you will be asked if you want SCAT or Wide/Narrow. After confirming this (once done, you cannot change the system type), you can edit or create a name for System. Trunked systems require you to then create sites, which have their own frequencies but share the Talkgroup Lists, while Conventional Systems let you go right into Groups, and contain the actual frequencies you want to use. Under the System Options menu you can set Quick Keys or Channel Tags. These allow faster access to the various Systems, Groups and Sites. The radio automatically detects P25 audio when the channel is programmed to FM or NFM mode. For weather reports, enter the SAME FIPS Codes (available from NOAA's website) for your county (and up to seven others) to have the radio alert you when there is a severe weather alert in your area.
