A router is a device which is usually used in networks, most commonly in Local Area and Wide Area networks. The routers determine the best path for transmitting the packets of data sent through a network. It then forwards the data packets. They are located at the place where two or more networks connect; this place is called as a gateway. So the routers located at the connection of the network would communicate with each other in order to form the best path for the data. Routers use protocols like ICMP (Internet control Message Protocol) for the purpose of communication and formation of the path.

The word "router" literally means the tool which is used for hollowing out or furrowing. In Networking language, router is considered as a computer which can perform the task to forward information. There are special operating systems available in the routers like Cisco's IOS, Extreme XOS etc. Moreover, there are processors, RAM, flash memory and some other necessary tools.

There are many ways in which routers are widely used in various organizations. A router can join two or more logical subnets. It is also optimized for Etherne LAN interface to accomplish the marketing functions. The three main types of routers include routers for internet connectivity, Small Office Home Office (SOCH) connectivity and routers in the enterprises.

performing these two jobs, a router joins the two networks, passing
information from one to the other and, in some cases, performing
  translations of various protocols
between the two networks. It also protects the networks from one
another, preventing the traffic on one from unnecessarily spilling over
  to the other. This
process is known as routing.By the way use can check the broadband-speed-test for how the information exchange at very fast
