Each statement—a mission statement and a vision
statement has its own distinct function in the
strategic planning process.

A mission
statement explains the company’s (or department’s) reason for existence.
It describes the company (or department), what it does and its overall
intention. The mission statement supports the vision and serves to
communicate purpose and direction to employees, customers, vendors and other stakeholders. The mission can change to reflect a company’s (or department’s) priorities and methods to accomplish its vision.

A vision statement describes the organization as it would appear in a
future successful state.  An effective vision statement is inspirational and aspirational. It creates a mental image of the future state that the organization wishes to achieve. A vision statement should challenge and inspire employees.

Yes mission is the same as mission statement and vision is the same as the vision statement but some companies do not write down specific statements but they do have a mission. Mission statement is the statement that lists the purpose of the organization, the reason that it exists. A mission statement is formed by keeping in mind the opportunities, threats, weaknesses and strengths of the organization. A mission is much more tangible, clear and specific. On the other hand a vision is broad, vague and it is a statement of something that has not been visualizes yet. A company can function without a vision statement but it can not operate without a mission. For example the vision statement of nestle is “to be the leading health, wellness, and nutrition company in the world.” Does this statement give you any idea about what business the company is in? It does not; it just gives you a vague statement that can be even suitable for a pharmaceutical company. However when you look at their mission statement, they have given in detail account of how they want to achieve this.
