Yes, laptops will die like that as they run a lot hotter than PC's. So many things it could be. Graphics chip, CPU fan burnt out and fried the CPU, old battery, and more. Five years is a decent life for most mid range and lower range laptops. Something just went out on it and will probably cost more to fix than replace. Not knowing the brand, it's hard for me to really say.
