Barbie is a popular doll manufactured by the American toy-company company Mattel. Launched in March 1959, and recently celebrating her 50th Birthday, Barbie was created by an American businesswoman called Ruth Handler.
Handler found that their was a gap in the market for adult figured dolls, and using a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration, she took the idea to Mattel.
Purchasing the rights to the toy, Handler re-worked the doll's design and renamed the blonde bombshell after her own daughter, Barbara.
Today's Barbie is an internationally recognized brand, and Barbie products have now expanded far from the original 11.5 inch doll, with books, clothing, cosmetics and video games.
Barbie has also appeared in a series of animated films and is a supporting character, along with boyfriend Ken, in Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3.
