Public IP addresses are just as the name suggests - public - and freely available to anyone who wants to access more information about them. Also known as 'Static IP Addresses', they may allow individuals to access information held on your computer or web server.

For a computer to connect to the internet, it needs to be assigned an IP address which is then in turn what is used to identify an individual computer online. This also allows computers to interact and communicate with each other over the internet.

What are Public IP Addresses?

• A website homepage has a Public IP Address as these are well known and allow an individual to connect to the website from their home or office computer. The address does not change and will be in the same place the next time the individual logs on to find it.
• If you need to have remote access to your computer for business for example, having a public or static IP will allow you to access the information from another computer source.
• For those interested in running an online forum or to post webcasts, having an IP address will allow them to connect with more people and reach a much larger audience. This can then be shared on social media sites for instance to get more people on board.
