This can be done with a PC but not a Mac. For a Mac you will need to purchase a disk from the apple store or online. After that you can continue to restart the password on the Mac. You should have the disk from when you purchased the computer.
Once you have the disk you need to insert it into the disk drive and Restart the computer while holding down the C key. A Utilities menu should appear this depends on which version of OS X you are running. Select Reset Password. Select Macintosh HD from the available volumes. On the menu, select the name of the original administrator account. Do not select System Administrator. Choose a new password and enter it in the two fields. Click Save.
You then have to change the keychain password. You do this by going to the Go menu from the Finder. Select Utilities and scroll down to locate Keychain Access. Double-click it.
Select Keychain List from the Edit menu. Highlight the login keychain and delete it. The next time you log in to the account you can save your new password.
To reset a password on a PC is much easier and you do not need a disk. Click the start icon, type in the word run in the window, A second pop-up window will appear; type in the letters cmd, then select OK. This will bring up the black DOS command screen. Type next to the administrator account the following command: Net(space)user(space) the username. After typing this command, press enter. Type in a new password in the command screen prompt area. Type the new password again once you are asked to confirm. Type the word Exit. This will bring you back to your login screen.
