Record player is an old technology, cd player is new one. Record player is also called as gramophone.

spins while reader reads information,
scratching interferes with the reading of the information
CD is digital, uses laser to read
record is analog, uses needle which touches record's surface
CD is more compact and newer
most records are made of vinyl while most CDs are from plastic and a thin sheet of aluminum
CD can hold information other than songs
CD is (obviously) newer
