  • What are the advantages of Adobe Photoshop?
The main advantage of Adobe Photoshop is that it gives users the ability to alter photographs. They can be altered to fix faults such as red eyes and something in the background which is unwanted. The colors can be altered slightly to make the photograph more attractive or appealing and standards can be achieved that cannot be achieved in real life. Photographs can be given an extremely professional look, even when a standard camera is used. People's faces can be touched up to remove spots or shine and things can be added into the photo to enhance the photo. Special effects can be created to add interest and a unique picture and the overall quality can be improved.

  • What are the disadvantages of Adobe Photoshop?
One of the disadvantages of Adobe Photoshop is the fact that the photo is not entirely real. Many people argue that photographers are 'faking it' and losing the ability to take a creative or professional shot because they know they are able to fix any photo using Photoshop. You can never be entirely sure if a photographer is extremely talented at taking photographs and capturing a scene at the perfect time of day to obtain the best lighting and positioning or if the photographer has enhanced it with computer software.

  • Photo editing software
The majority of photographers will now use some form of photo editing software and argue that it should be used to make the most out of a photograph. A photographer may have the ability to take a good photo on their camera and then have the ability to make it perfect with their computer so they would be silly not to use that opportunity to create perfection.

Remember too that out in the 'real world' of Graphic Design, Photoshop is the industry standard. It's silly to educate anyone in MS paint, Fireworks, PaintShop Pro or any other programs because they are not the industry standard.

Adobe photoshop is a powerful photo-editing tool, which can be used in a variety of educational contexts, from preparing artwork for projects to studying photo-editing and graphic design.

It's main disadvantage is that it is proprietary, meaning it's source code is a secret. The source code is the code that human programmers work with to write and modify computer programs, and it is what you read and study to learn how a program works. Student's should be allowed to pursue their curiosity about how things work, including the tools they use, but this is forbidden with proprietary software. Without the source code, you can not study its inner workings. This is a major handicap for students who may have an interest in computer science and programming. It is like teaching students to write while denying them access to the great literature, or teaching them to paint or sculpt while forbidding them to study great art. Free software, like the GIMP, does not have this problem. Since the source code is freely available, students can study and learn from it. They can tinker with, modify it, and learn by doing. They can fix bugs or add features to the software, giving back to the community as they learn and develop their skills. I would universally prefer free software (as in freedom, not price) over proprietary for education. Additionally, Photoshop is quite expensive while the GIMP can be obtained at no cost.
