There are some arguments about who were the first real inventors of the computer and when they were first created. This is due to what people class as a computer and how relative it is seen to be to what a computer is today. Some important facts regarding the history of computers are summarized as follows;

  • It is widely believed that one of the first forms of what you would class as a modern computer was built by Alan Turing in 1936.

  • Wikipedia states that Turing "provided an influential formalization of the concept of the algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, providing a blueprint for the electronic digital computer."

  • The Turing machine is said to be a very early indication of the possibilities to come and represents a lot of the actions such as using the keyboard that we still use to this day.

  • Inventor Konrad Zuse built what was classed as the first working computer in 1941 and in 1955 he also built the first computer that was said to be based on magnetic storage.

  • You can find a full list of all the inventions that have helped to make computers what they are today at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer#First_general-purpose_compute
Computers have become an invaluable part of modern life and it is near impossible to imagine people and businesses surviving without computers now. Therefore the first attempts at this kind of technology were vital to the progression we see today.
