The data link layer, also called the link layer sometimes, is the second of the layers attributed to the OSI model that is used to describe networks. This is the layer where the different network technologies work. These technologies include token ring, Ethernet, etc.
Each of the layers in the OSI model have specific functions. In the case of the data link layer, though the layer is intangible, it is further split into two more layers. These are called Logical Link Control and Media Access Control.
As the name suggests, the Logical Link Control layer within the data link layer enables logical links to be established between different devices located locally on a network. The media access control layer basically contains those processes that enable devices within a network to control access to it.
Besides these, the main functions of the logical link layer include capturing the data in frames, and creating addresses for this data. Besides, it is also responsible for detecting and taking care of errors within the network.
