There is not a country telephone code which starts 97. The countries with +97 at the start usually have a third number following that which determines which exact location you are dialling. These numbers tend to be located fairly close to each other in global terms and a number of them have been altered in recent years to be covered under the umbrella category of United Arab Emirates. Below is a list of all the current +97 codes and the third number which determines the exact location:

- Palestinian Territories

- United Arab Emirates (other number such as 197, 198 and 199 have been amalgamated and now all fall under this category)

- Israel

- Bahrain

- Qatar

- Bhutan

- Mongolia

- Nepal

This telephone number system requires the caller to include an international prefix, such as 44 for the UK or 977 for Nepal. This needs to be added before the calling code and is specific to the country from which the caller is dialling. Generally, as in the list above, the need for this prefix is specified with a "+". The dialler is also usually required to removed the first number of the original telephone number, so for example, to dial the UK it would be + 44 then miss off the first 0 of the phone number.
