i havet an iphone 4s that i dont know the password to. I tried to factory reset it using itunes but everytime i try it makes me uptate the phone and it goes out of recovery mode. are there any ways to reset iphones without itunes?

If "your" iphone had updates past ios 4.something, you're losing your time. You either need 1) a computer with credentials for that phone 2)the appleid&password linked to it 3)proof of purchase as the original owner and heading to the apple store.
