Kik is an online messaging service. Launched in 2010, by the summer of 2014 Kik had notched up over 120 million users. Below is all the information I think you should know about the app:

Kik is available as an free-to-download app on the iOS, Android and Windows Phone 7.

Using Kik is not unlike texting, except Kik can also be used for group conversations and viewing websites. Kik itself has declared it wants the phone, rather than the PC, to be the preferred method of accessing the internet, and so made its app the first smartphone messenger with a built-in browser, meaning you can talk to a fellow user (or users) while you browse online - and if you find a something online you like, you can share it with your friends at once.

Criticism of Kik

Kik is popular with kids and early teens, who like the fact that conversations can be swiftly deleted, leaving no record of the conversation taking place; it's the ultimate in instant messaging, and parents can't find out what their kid has been doing on Kik.

This is a concern as although Kik's terms and conditions prohibit under 13s from setting up an account, there is no age verification system. Add in a lack of parent control settings, and some young users' habit of giving details of their account name online, then it's easy to see why parents are concerned as to who their child may encounter while using Kik.

If you're a kid reading this who uses Kik, remember - keep safe and don't give out your details to anyone you're not 100% certain you know.
