Before you start trying to configure the settings on your computer, first check that this message is appearing for every website. Sometimes when specific websites suffer with glitches it can relay this message. Try a few different sites and check that the error is the same for all of them. If this error seems to be one that is affecting the whole of your internet browser then there are a few steps that you can carry out to try and solve it. If you haven't already tried, disconnect your internet from your wireless or wired network and then try reconnecting it. If this does not have an effect, do the same but instead reboot the modem or router while the computer is disconnected from the network. If all the possible combinations of rebooting or restarting components of your computer is still producing the same error message then you will need to alter the settings within Firefox.

If the problem is with your firewall then it could be that your firewall is blocking the internet browser's access to the internet. Depending on the firewall system you have on your computer, you should be able to configure it so that can allow certain programs different levels of access to the network. This can be a slightly difficult progress but there are guides available (such as kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls) that offer step by step walkthroughs of the procedure. Alternatively the problem may lie within your proxy settings. In order to change these within Firefox, you will first need to go to the Tools bar in your browser. Within here you should select 'Options' and then 'Advanced'. Within the advanced tool options you will then be able to configure the Network Settings. Click to get your computer to 'Detect Proxy Settings' or allow for 'Auto Proxy Settings'. Try different combinations to see which works best for your computer.
