Cisco IOS (originally Internetwork Operating System) is the software used on the vast majority of Cisco systems routers and current Cisco network switches.
This prompt refers to the router in your computer. Various prompts can be displayed and they can refer to a number of issues within the router. If you have a Cisco router that message means that you have entered the interface configuration mode.
Interface configuration mode is a subcommand mode of the global configuration access mode of Cisco command-line interface (CLI). The interface command is used to move from global configuration mode to the interface configuration mode. The prompt changes to host name (config-if)# from host name (config)# when a user moves from global configuration mode to interface configuration mode. After entering the interface configuration mode, the commands executed affects only the interface that the user has selected. Due to each computer and the various networks available all being so different it is not possible to make a broad and sweeping statement regarding what prompts are and are not possible. It is probably best to contact the customer help team at Cisco through their Internet site. Go to www.cisco.com and click on the link for customer support.
