Data processing is the procedure of processing information in a computer system. It is through this process that data is manipulated by software to produce a required result. For instance, an employee may log the hours they work via a computer. This data could then be processed to produce a printed sheet detailing what tasks they have undertaken, and what pay they are owed.

Data processing involves four steps:

• Data input; this is the step in which information is put into the computer. This could be in the form of typing information into a word processor, completing a spreadsheet or downloading data from the Internet.
• Data processing; the most fundamental step of the procedure, this is the time at which information is processed via the software of the computer. Various programs process data in different ways; for instance, a program may process the results of an external survey to produce a pie chart.
• Data output; this is the point at which the results of data processing are shown. The results are transported out of the computer. For instance, they could be uploaded onto the Internet, of printed out via a printer.
• Data storage; this final stage involves the final results of information processing being stored in the computer system. A computer must have free memory stage for this to happen. This allows the data to be stored in a secure location and accessed at any time.

Data processing is a fundamental component of the computer system. The main purpose of computer software is to process software in various forms, and there are endless types of data processing programs that can be ran by computers systems.
