A subnet or sub-network is usually utilized to break large networks into logical groups. One of those groups might be the accounting department. The members of a subnet exist on the same logical router. That router will look at traffic from each device on the subnet and if it recognizes the recipient as being on the same subnet sends the information directly to that recipient. If the recipient is not on the subnet, the data is sent over the entire network and possibly out over the Internet.
