Douglas Merrick in Coeur d'Alene, ID had a tourist information website called dogwander.com back in 2000 that did exactly what google maps do now. He also had 3d shaded relief maps of the area he had mapped. Interestingly, Google was the best search engine for linking to these maps! His website was an example of the power of GRASS GIS believe it or not.
