Brain Surge has become a global phenomenon since its inception in February 2009. It’s a real test of mettle and brain power as there are a number of challenges designed to test the memory and comprehension skills of its contestants.
Split into four levels, the first level pits six contestants (known as the 'Brainiacs') against a series of visual puzzles, worth 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 100 points each (for a maximum of 250 in season 1, and 210 in season 2).
Each tricky solution is a number that the players have to enter by means of their keypads. The contestants have 10 seconds to lock in their answers. The two lowest scoring contestants are eliminated from the game
Level Two sees the four remaining contestants listen to a story being recounted. They are then asked by the presenter questions regarding the book and the contestant who gets a question wrong is immediately eliminated. The process carries on until only two contestant remain.
The Knockout Round sees the two surviving contestants have just 10 seconds to memorise a 4x4 grid containing eight pairs of images from the story.
The Final Stage sees the last contestant memorising and correctly recalling a number of patterns including 4x4, 5x5, and 6x6 sized illuminated floors.
Six squares must be stepped on for the 4x4, eight squares are required for the 5x5 and ten squares are necessary for the 6x6.
Before the contestant starts, they are allowed to see a sequence twice. After completing each path successfully, the contestant must step on an actuator outside of the board to stop the clock and view the next path. They must correctly perform the sequence to win prizes or face the dreaded slime at the end of the programme.
