The show was inspired by the Tokyo children’s television show called Brain Survivor, and is now one of the most popular with kids in the United States. It is hosted by Jeff Sutphen, an American actor and producer. During the show, the participants, called Brainiacs, compete in a series of challenging and quick moving games, which have been designed to test each participant’s memory and skills. A wrong answer leads to humorous consequences such as the Face Wall suck or the Brain Drain. The overall winner is treated to some major sliming at the end, a tradition of Nickelodeon network shows.
The first level of Brain Surge involves a game of visual puzzles which require the Brainiacs to enter solutions on their keypads within 10 seconds. Those with the lowest score are sent down a slide containing fake ear wax, called the Brain Drain. On the second level, the remaining Brainiacs are told a story which they are inquired about later on. The one who answers incorrectly is eliminated as he or she is whisked away on a chair which produces farting sounds. This is followed by a Knockout Round, where the remaining two contestants are required to memorize images from the story, placed on a 4x4 grid. The winner then goes on a sudden death match, while those who fail to correctly memorize the images are sent to the Brain Drain.
On the final level, the remaining player is required correctly memorize patterns illustrated on 4x4, 5x5, and 6x6 floor panels. They are shown sequences twice which have to be copied by stepping on the squares to form the correct pattern, step on the actuator and view the next set. Whenever a contestant is able to complete a pattern, they are awarded a prize, until the time runs out.
