The software company Oracle was founded by Lawrence Ellison along with Bruce Scott in 1977; Scott left the company in 1984. Currently Ellison is the CEO of the company and is ranked fourth in the Forbes list of the 400 Richest Americans with a net worth of $19.6 billion.

Lawrence or Larry Ellison's success story rising from a modest background to becoming one of the richest persons in the world has been well documented. Larry Ellison was born on August 17, 1944 in New York City and was adopted at the age of nine months; he spent his childhood years with distant relatives. Though a bright student he was unable to complete formal education and dropped out from college in his second year.

He was interested in software development and in his first professional assignment while working for the Ampex Corporation developed a database for the CIA which he named as Oracle. This led to his co founding a company in 1977 using his own money named Software Development Laboratory which was to be later christened as Oracle.
