You will be unable to tell if it really is yourself, and the reason for that is that there are so many different type of cell phone spy ware in the market today, and most are undetectable. Although it is a federal crime it seems that everyone and their brother are doing it anyway.
Her are some possibilities: If your battery drains quicker the usually that is one indication.
If your phone gets hot that can be an indication.
If you feel that someone may know something about you that you only shared via your cell phone.
If someone barrowed your phone.
If you are in a jealous relationship.
If you have something someone wants.
The reason the battery drains quickly is because the program is always running in the background
The reason the phone get hot is due to the same reason.
I would not ATTEMPT to remove the bug yourself, because 9 out of 10 you will probably screw up your phone. Take the battery out of your phone, and use a different phone until you fix this problem.
The only way I know, and I have searched a lot is taking to IDF, or sending it to them.
IDF is based in Philadelphia. They are either cops, or ex cops with forensic experts working together. I heard they also provide investigations and help you catch the people responsible for bugging your phone. They also offer tips, to do's and not to do's.
I do know that the employee I spoke to was an forensic scientist from the Israeli defense.

My company has always used the people mentioned above. IDF task force. They have been debugging cell phones since they were analog. I actually witness them removing a bug from one of the sales rep phones. They were even able to tell us the date it was bugged, and were it came from. Another thing I learn is that there are a lot of scam, sites that offer bug detectors for cell phones...DON'T BELIEVE THAT LIE. You can not detect a cell phone bug with an RF detector..

This YouTube video gives an overview of signs of this; there is also a radio v4 programme, "Being bugged" discussing the huge growth in UK surveillance, which can be accessed online. However, while the technology to bug your mobile is of course available, it is expensive, and you would have to ask yourself who would want to do that? If you have reason to suspect anyone, of course that's different, but otherwise I would check very carefully before believing I was being bugged.
