For performing tasks software requires compatible hardware. To make the two things compatible for each other operating system provides an interface to hardware. In this way the coordination between the two is controlled and both work parallel to each other.

According to me h/w and s/w are different thing but without the help of each other they cannot run as h/w need s/w as for example with cable (let's consider as S/w) and t.v set(let consider H/w) unless and until both present we can't watch TV.
