It really depends on your kid's age and interest, but I always enjoy reading the "classic" fairytales to my daughter. There's just something magical about them.
Growing up, I was really into Enid Blyton books. Is that geeky? I'm not sure...
I also loved reading fantasy books, I used to pick the thickest ones in the library so that I'd have plenty to read :)
I also enjoyed the Philip Pullman series, as well as Harry Potter of course.
