Minecraft is an independently produced online computer game launched in 2011, initially for PC, and subsequently for iOS, Android, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox and Xbox 360.

Minecraft has been described as a cross between Lego and the 'construct a world' games such as The Sims.

A player builds his own world out of 3D generated blocks which can be broken and placed together with similar blocks to form natural or architectural constructions.  Blocks come in the form of grass, rock, soil, stone, metals, wood (trees) and so on. The field of play is almost infinite and the terrain featured includes plains, lakes, forests, mountains, caves and cliffs.

What Is The Player's Goal in Minecraft?

This depends which mode you play the game in. 'Creative' mode is most like a Lego set, where you have all the blocks available to you and can just build uninhibited and let your imagination run free. 'Survival' mode however makes more of a game of it.

You play in the same world of blocks and use them to build new things, but monsters come out at night and if they get you then you may find you have to start all over again. Monsters include zombies, giant spiders and living skeletons. Therefore, you must construct with self-protection in mind.

As well as monsters, each player must be aware of the 'health bar' of their character, and avoid drowning, falling or starving. You're not on your own though - Minecraft is a multiplayer game, and you can exchange or buy good from other players or band together in mutual protection against the monsters.

By June 2014, Minecraft had sold over 54 million copies across a variety of platforms.
