MPLS is the acronym for Multi Protocol Label Switching a term used widely in telecommunications and computer networking. MPLS is basically a mechanism for the carrying of data that is based on the properties found in a circuit switched network and dissimilar from those seen in a packet-switched network. The OSI Model layer at which a MPLS operates is termed a Layer 2.5 protocol.

It was designed keeping in mind that a unified service for carrying was required. Both packet-switching clients and circuit based clients could avail of MPLS. Though several technologies existed in and were earlier deployed to solve pretty much similar goals, including ATM and frame relay, most of these are being progressively replaced by MPLS as it is more in tune with both present and emerging technologies.
