Why is the internet a waste of time?

According to a scientific study published by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, more than half the people that use the internet simply do so because they're bored or don't have anything better to do.

Here's an interesting stat pulled from that report:

" 53 percent of 18 to 29 year-olds go online just to have fun or pass time."

This figure is probably even higher if you consider the amount of people that use the internet to surf porn or look at pictures of grumpy cats, but might not be so keen to reveal this kind of information to a national survey.

So, despite the internet's place as the most magnificent and remarkable invention attributed to mankind - it's also certainly true that it's one of the biggest "eaters of people's spare time" too.
This begs the question, what on earth would we be doing with all that free time if we didn't have Facebook, Twitter and millions of other websites demanding our constant attention?
Would we have cured cancer by now? Or discovered the answer to another of life's mysteries? Or would we spend all our time writing letters and sending telegrams instead?
If you feel like you're spending too much time online, then I'd recommend checking out this article by GalaDarling.com. It's basically a list of 100 things to do offline (rather ironic that you need to visit a website to tell you what to do online, what I guess that kind of proves how web-dependant we've all become).

That stat you just called 'Interesting', seriously? Everyone knows that! Most people know that the only reason we go online is because we have no other life. (apart from the times I actually do, which doesn't make sense but who cares)... where was I? Yeh I just confused myself nevermind it happens often.

I would say that the amount of time saved, as well as the number of discoveries made as a result of the Internet, far outweighs the amount of idle hours spent looking things up online.
