e.tv is the fifth terrestrial television channel in South Africa, following the three state-owned channels (SABC 1, SABC 2 and SABC 3) and the privately owned subscription channel M-Net. It was the first privately owned but free-to-air television station in the country when it launched on 1 October 1998.
The channel's headquarters are in Cape Town, although it broadcasts from both Cape Town and Johannesburg. The prime time evening news bulletin at 19:00 comes from Johannesburg, whereas the 22:00 late-night bulletin is broadcast from Cape Town.

It also broadcasts highlights of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) on a regular basis. The broadcasting of WWE programming six days per week has led e.tv to brand themselves as 'the home of WWE'. WWE pay-per-view events are now broadcast exclusively by e.tv.
