When ever potential difference applied across a conductor , electric field set up inside the conductor , which causes electron to move towards higher potential zone , which will in turn produce current .

Current is produced in a conductor due to flow of charge that is free electrons move towards a point where the electrons are at different electrical potential. Hence free electrons produce currents when flowing from an electrical potential towards a different electrical potential.
