Well as far as I read:
Lee Deforest invented space telegraphy, the triode amplifier and the Audion. In the early 1900s, the great requirement for further development of radio was an efficient and delicate detector of electromagnetic radiation. Lee De Forest provided that detector. It made it possible to amplify the radio frequency signal picked up by the antenna before application to the receiver detector; thus, much weaker signals could be utilized than had previously been possible. De Forest was also the person who first used the word "radio".

The result of Lee DeForest's work was the invention of amplitude-modulated or AM radio that allowed for a multitude of radio stations. The earlier spark-gap transmitters did not allow for this.

It is generally accepted that the radio was invented by Guglielmo Marconi. He transmitted Morse code across the Atlantic. Others including, Oliver Lodge, Alexander Popov and Nikola Tesla are sometime given credit. Probably because they might have sent wireless messages before Marconi received his patent.

Alexander Stepanovich is said to have built the first radio receiver.  There's a lot of people taking claim to the "first radio"

William Marconi got the word transmitted out there first...and he stayed with the invention through all the first trials & tribulations of the new technology till, it stood on it's own and was accepted for the advance it is! As for the mind of Nikola Tesla, it is with out a peer in the areas of electrical generation and range of applications. Edison was many steps below this Croatian's understanding and development of the flow of electrons! Take a few days in the Library or the Net to fully appreciate just the introduction to this man's genius!

Gugliegmo Marconi was an Italian inventor, and was (at first) credited
with the invention of the radio, but he was later proven to have used
17 of Nikola Tesla's patents. In 1943, the radio patent by a vote by
the United States Congress was reversed and given to Nikola Tesla.
